Will the aspiration be painful?
Local anaesthetic is applied to the area before the needle is introduced, so sharp pain during the procedure is uncommon. Patients typically describe a feeling of pressure as the fluid is withdrawn rather than pain. How long does aspiration recovery take?
Most patients return to their normal daily activities the same day or the morning after their appointment at our Newcastle clinic. If a cyst does return, aspiration can be performed again, and all your options will be discussed openly.

How does aspiration compare to surgery?
Aspiration is a sensible, minimally invasive starting point for most patients before surgery is considered. It requires no general anaesthetic, recovery is quick, and the procedure itself carries a low risk profile. Surgical excision removes the cyst and its root, which does reduce the likelihood of recurrence compared with aspiration alone, but recovery takes longer, and the procedural risks are greater. What about home remedies?
Some traditional remedies involve striking the cyst with a heavy book or applying firm manual pressure. These approaches rarely produce a lasting result, can cause unnecessary pain and bruising, and do nothing to confirm what the lump actually is. The first step with any unexplained lump is a proper clinical assessment. If you have something on your wrist, hand or foot that concerns you, the most straightforward thing you can do is come in and have it looked at by someone who deals with exactly this.
What soreness should I expect afterwards?
Some tenderness at the site for the first day or two is perfectly normal following aspiration. Over-the-counter pain relief such as paracetamol is usually sufficient if needed.
