What is a Rotator Cuff Injury?

The rotator cuff enables you to lift and rotate the arm and hold the shoulder ball within the joint.
Rotator cuff injuries are common and often arise in people with jobs that require frequent overhead movements, such as bricklayers, decorators and carpenters. A tear or pull of these groups of muscles can come from lifting heavy objects, repetitive above-head lifting or a fall.
Physical therapy exercises can improve the strength of the shoulder joint muscles, helping with flexibility. If calcium deposits are present, calcific barbotage may be recommended. For many with rotator cuff concerns, physical exercise is all that’s needed to manage their symptoms.

Occasionally, rotator cuff tears occur from a single injury. In these circumstances, people should seek medical advice quickly because they could need surgery.

An in-house diagnostic ultrasound scan helps to diagnose your rotator Cuff Injury and treat your problem appropriately in the same visit.

  • Rotator cuff Tendinitis pain: Tendinitis, tears, supraspinatus Calcifications.
  • Rotator Cuff tear: Severe pain and weakness in shoulder movement.

Why do I need a private diagnostic ultrasound scan for a Rotator Cuff Injury?

Rotator Cuff Injury is a common problem with the group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. Rotary Cuff Injuries can be diagnosed by a physical examination or a diagnostic ultrasound to determine if a tear is possible. A correct diagnosis helps to formulate an appropriate treatment plan to optimise recovery.

Rotary Cuff Injury can be experienced by any age group, occupation or sport. Its more common with occupations involving repetitive movements, such as overhead activities, lifting, pulling, and pushing, also gym-related injuries such as weight training and sports injuries. An older age bracket can be prone to rotator cuff injuries and traumatic rotator cuff tears from a fall or while lifting a heavy object. Following an injury or a tear, you would experience pain, stiffness and a dull ache. The diagnostic ultrasound scan can differentiate between the two.

Where has my Rotator Cuff Injury come from?

Rotator cuff injuries are common and often result from an acute injury, such as a fall, or be caused by heavy lifting. It’s also normal ageing-related wear and tear concern from degeneration of the tendon in people who have jobs that require frequently performing overhead movements, such as bricklayers, decorators and carpenters. With a rotator cuff injury, generally, you feel pain in the front of your shoulder that radiates down the side of your arm. You may feel weakness and stiffness in your arm, you may feel pain when you try to sleep on the affected side and if the tear occurs with injury, you may experience acute pain, a snapping sensation, with immediate weakness of the arm.

What treatment should i expect for a Rotator Cuff Injury?

Conventional treatments, such as rest, ice and physical therapy are often all that is needed to recover from a rotator cuff injury.

Physical therapy is usually one of the first treatments offered. Exercises tailored to the specific location of your rotator cuff injury can help restore strength to your shoulder and the shoulder’s flexibility. Physical therapy is essential for recovery.

A steroid injection into the shoulder joint can be beneficial, especially if the pain is interfering with sleep, daily activities or physical therapy.

Many different types of surgeries are available for rotator cuff injuries:

  • Arthroscopic tendon repair. Surgeons insert a tiny camera (arthroscope) and tools through small incisions to reattach the torn tendon to the bone.
  • Open tendon repair. The surgeon works via a larger incision to reattach the damaged tendon to the bone.
  • Tendon transfer. Surgeons may decide to use a nearby tendon as a replacement when a torn tendon is too damaged to be reattached to the arm bone.
  • Shoulder replacement. Massive rotator cuff injuries may require shoulder replacement surgery.
How can i aid the recovery of my Rotary Cuff Injury?

Try and stop what caused the pain, try to avoid painful movements, and avoid heavy lifting and overhead activity until the shoulder recovers. Icing the shoulder may help it feel better, Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and rest will also aid recovery.

Could continued repetitive use cause more damage?

A rotator cuff tear can extend or get larger over time with continued repetitive use or a re-injury. If you know you have a rotator cuff tear, worsening pain and reduced strength can mean the tear is getting larger.

Joint Care Clinic Shoulder Pain Testimonials

Shoulder Pain Treatment

"Fantastic service, the appointment provided an exact diagnosis of my shoulder problem, the results of the examination were provided in real-time, and therefore the treatment I require. I wish I had seen Ram sooner as I would likely have my injury repaired by now. I will 100% use Ram's service in the future, rather than waste time and money with other treatments." Lawrence McCaughey

Shoulder Injury

"Ramakrishna managed to squeeze me in at very short notice following a few months of unsuccessful physio on my shoulder. He quickly diagnosed the problem and explained everything thoroughly so I was aware of what the issue was, what I needed to do to get better & how to manage it in the short term. He quickly sent me a very detailed letter & proposal to refer me to a specialist for surgery. All within 48 hours of me getting in touch with him. Hugely professional service & I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend joint care clinics to anyone." Christopher Evans

Shoulder Steroid Injection

"I seem to have hit an age where I am getting injuries that do not resolve, which both compromises my pursuit of long-distance triathlons and can cause day-to-day pain. I have now had three procedures with Ram (knee, hand and shoulder), and as a doctor myself I appreciate his approach and would refer to him without hesitation. His professionalism and passion for his work are immediately apparent. Ram was able to reassure me that on ultrasound there was no obvious major injury to my shoulder such as a tendon tear, but offered me what was an immediately effective steroid injection to the area that he thought clinically would be most appropriate given my impingement syndrome, and similarly, with my knee." William Wolf

Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections

"I would like to wholeheartedly thank Ram. I had been waiting well over 8 months with the NHS to sort out my shoulder problem, to no avail. So looked for a private consultation with Ram at the joint care clinic. After my consultation and an ultrasound which diagnosed arthritis and bursitis, I received steroid injections. I have had steroid injections in the past which I found uncomfortable, but under Ram's expert hands, these were not at all painful. One very happy lady." GB

Frozen Shoulder Treatment

"A truly amazing experience with Mr Ram today. I visited his practice in Rugby to have a USG injection to help with pain and movement to my frozen shoulder. He explained everything in great detail before proceeding with the injection. He also highlighted a secondary issue during the scan which I can now refer to my doctor. I travelled a 13-hour round trip from Devon and it was so worth it as I am already feeling the benefit from my procedure" Anthony Waring

Shoulder Ultrasound Scan

"I needed to know the extent of the problem for a painful shoulder injury. A convenient appointment time and place was quickly arranged. Ram performed an assessment examination and ultrasound scan and quickly identified the problem. It helped to be able to see the exact problem on the scan and to have an expert explanation." Peter White

Shoulder Pain

"I visited Ram after seeking a diagnosis from other practitioners. He was very kind and took the time to examine my shoulder show me the ultrasound and explain why my shoulder was so painful. He then gave me a steroid injection which was a remarkably pain-free affair.
After a week I am considerably more comfortable. He is a caring sympathetic individual and I have no hesitancy in recommending him to anyone who wants to know what's wrong and receive advice and therapy. Thank you, Ram." Patricia Russell
