These injections are very popular, especially for knee joint pain. Any number of injections can be taken in a given period, due to minimal or no side effects from these injections. Usually, a course of 3 Injections is preferred, though some may do well just with an injection per year 9 we have patients managing just with 1/year.

A diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound scan uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the Joints, tendons, muscles, ligaments, nerves, and other soft tissue throughout the body. This helps to identify the abnormalities of the musculoskeletal problems.

You will not be able to drive immediately after the procedure. Bring someone with you or use another form of transport to return home. This is mainly due to your driving license policy, rather than injection efficacy. The majority of the motor insurance policies will not allow you to drive for 3-5 hours after the injection with Local Anaesthesia.

The cost of steroid injections may vary depending on the area and how many are required. More than one injection in the same appointment attracts an additional discount.

The advantages of Ultrasound Guided Injections and Scanning:

• Ultrasound can detect the presence of active inflammation in inflammatory conditions, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis. This is a unique feature exclusive to diagnostic ultrasound scans.
• Ultrasound improves the accuracy of the injection, hence offering faster and better pain relief. Usually, you are referred for an ‘ultrasound-guided injection’ if landmark-guided injections have failed to control your symptoms.
• Immediate provision of a diagnosis at a low cost. Meaning ultrasound helps in determining the potential source of pain.
• An ultrasound scan also helps to assess treatment response.
• Ultrasound scan is a readily available, non-harmful, non-invasive modality.

After the injection, you may feel pain-free for a couple of hours due to Local anaesthesia. However, the pain returns after 2 hours, and you may even feel more pain for a couple of days due to bruising. Usually, you should start feeling better from the third day onwards. Pain relief from the steroid injection may take 1 to 2 weeks.

Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using an ice pack (wrapped in a towel, to minimise the risk of frostbite from direct skin contact) to the area of treatment. Use the icepack up to 3-4 times a day for 10-15 minutes at each time.

We can accurately inject the treatment area. However, pain relief depends on several factors, such as the severity of the problem, body response to the steroid injection, rest period following an injection, rehabilitation, and exposure to the risk factors.
